Polanco breaks out of slump, Pirates top Cubs 4-3

Chicago Cubs' first round pick Alex Lange falls behind early against FSU

The difference would turn out to be huge since the Cubs ended up losing by one.

The Cubs (33-33) got back to.500 thanks to a three-run first inning and a six-run ninth inning. The Pirates are scheduled to send James Tailon to the bump to oppose the visiting Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Let's get to the numbers.

The Homestead Grays perhaps have had their uniform worn in more Major League Baseball games than any other Negro league club, the Pirates and Washington Nationals have worn the Grays uniform a combined sixteen times previously, the Nationals doing so to acknowledge those split-seasons in the 40s. Butler did not allow a hit through 3 1/3 innings. "It happens. You hope that you can just find a way to get through the inning a make an adjustment". Nova has pitched at least six innings in all 13 starts this season. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings Saturday giving up seven hits (three of which were homers) a walk and nine earned runs. "You look at him".

Left-hander Alex Wood remained unbeaten by pitching four-hit ball over eight innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their domination of Cincinnati. Instead, after a meeting on the mound with pitching coach Chris Bosio, Butler threw a 94 miles per hour four-seam fastball over the plate and Bell hit it off the wall in right. "Getting those guys back closer to normal will be outstanding". But Rizzo dropped a bunch of f-bombs and a few bullshits for good measure that the WGN microphones clearly picked up.

Manager Joe Maddon wasn't around to see the comeback - he was ejected in the first inning after Rizzo's drive into the Allegheny River was intially called fair, then ruled foul. Rizzo stayed in the game and got walked. Had he made the play, the home run by Gregory Polanco, the following batter, would have scored only one run. In related news, when I was in Pittsburgh this week, I ate three slices of pizza from my favorite spot, Mineo's in Squirrel Hill.

NOTES: Chicago 2B Ben Zobrist was put in the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday, because of left wrist inflammation.

David Peralta tripled among his three hits, including a single that followed Blanco's second homer of the season off Aaron Nola (3-5) in the seventh. Chicago mustered seven hits and a trio of bases on balls with Addison Russell leaving the yard while Jake Arrieta clubbed a two run jack.

The Next Level: More on the first-inning error by Arrieta.

Jose Abreu also went deep to help the White Sox win their fourth straight series against the Blue Jays, beating them for the ninth time in the in the last 10 games. Their previous high was four, which was accomplished once.

While the NL Central title is still in reach as the Brewers are just 2 1/2 games out in front of the Cubs, what isn't in sight for the Cubs at this second is a world title. Which leads us into our next number.
