Duncan and Brooks were at the Alexandria, Virginia, field where GOP members of Congress were practicing for a congressional baseball game Wednesday, although Duncan left before the shooting began. Steve Scalise, congressional aide Zach Barth and US Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were also shot in the early morning ambush; Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were injured.

"He's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought", he said, adding that he hoped the country could become more unified in the aftermath of the shooting.

Once recovered, Scalise will be able to walk and hopefully run, the doctor said.

The 51-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana underwent another surgery on Saturday, the hospital treating him said, which was at least his third operation since being transported to the facility.

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding. Sava said Scalise "clearly knows" his family is there and "appreciates" their presence.

Congressman Scalise was among five people wounded in the attack. Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalised.

House Speaker Paul Ryan has paid a visit to wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise at the hospital.

Ms Griner remains in hospitali at MedStar after being shot in the ankle and Mr Bailey was spotted on Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers. He's been undergoing repeat surgeries. The annual GOP-Democrats baseball game raises money for charity.
