Imam Barkati sacked from his post at Tipu Sultan Mosque

Maulana Nurur Rehman Barkati has been sacked as the Shahi Imam of Tipu Sultan Mosque for "objectionable and inflammatory remarks against the country". If he fails to do so, they might lodge a complaint against him.

It warned Barkati that "appropriate action" would be taken against him if he chose to "violate any terms of the letter of termination". The committee is functioning for 12 years only. "I will continue my work here as an Imam.", he added. "Actually, an Urdu newspaper and a section of TMC MPs are conspiring against me and want to remove me so that they can siphon off the wakf property". Barakati who took pride in being called close to Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister had also issued a series of fatwas. "I have to explore what legal step I can take", he said at the press conference.

"The termination notice has been sent and he (Barkati) is not the Imam of Tipu Sultan mosque with effect from today (Wednesday)", said Arif Ahmed, chairman of Prince Gholam Ahmed Wakf Estate, the custodian trust of the mosque. The mosque board, which earlier issued him a warning for his political comments, took the step a day after an attack at the office of an Urdu daily, in which the Imam's son was allegedly involved.

The controversial cleric is considered to be close to the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Barkati was forced to take off the red beacon from his vehicle on Saturday, under pressure from the state government. I do not follow the orders of the Centre. He first targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after the demonetization saga and then threatened of even Jihad if India is declared Hindu Nation which is something that defies the constitution of India.

Expressing similar views, another BJP leader Dilip Gosh said, "It is unfortunate since Imam is a religious figure". Who are they to terminate me?

A senior officer of Kolkata traffic police told news agency PTI that the Imam had removed the red beacon of his own volition.

He had also drawn flak for commenting that Muslims would "fight for Pakistan if India became a Hindu state". A number of police complaints were also lodged against the Imam in different police stations.
