Netflix renews '13 Reasons Why' for second season

Nicolet High School

13 Reasons Why has, undoubtedly, been one of Netflix's most controversial outputs since the streaming service began. The show follows Hannah Baker, a high school junior who commits suicide after recording a series of 13 tapes explaining her decision and placing the blame on various other students at her suburban high school.

Since its debut on March 31, "13 Reasons Why" has become the most-tweeted about show of 2017, with Netflix reporting more than 11 million mentions, EOnline reported.

13 Reasons Why was a wildly popular Netflix series, which dealt with issues many teens face such as sexual assault, bullying and its central issue: bullying.

Some have criticized the show for glorifying suicide, which led to Netflix adding an additional warning to the series.

The thirteen episode drama series, which is based on the best-selling books by Jay Asher, is produced by Paramount Television and stars Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford, Kate Walsh, Brain D'Arcy, Derek Luke, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Alisha Boe, Christian Navarro and Tommy Dorfman.

The show will be back for a 13-episode second season in 2018, according to Deadline .

"Sometimes it takes provocative experiences to get our attention", Dr. Eric Beeson, a counseling expert and faculty member at Northwestern University, told Mashable.

The show's executive producer Selena Gomez posted the same announcement to her Instagram account.

We have developed resources on our website at www.tuscaloosacityschools.com that may help you with having this conversation at home, which includes risk factors, signs of suicide, and a suicide hotline number to call if you need assistance. Brian Yorkey will reportedly return as the showrunner. I think that this story is very much about Hannah Baker's death, and the secrets that came to light because of it, and the tremendous healing that still has to go on for these kids, and also for the adults who were close to Hannah. I'd brainstormed it, but decided I wasn't going to write it.

Actress Kate Walsh shared a teaser for the new season on Twitter.
