Ajax's home stadium to be named after Johan Cruyff

The city has also agreed to name a street, square or bridge after him in the coming months.

"The board of the Amsterdam Arena (Stadion Amsterdam), the board of AFC Ajax and the mayor have agreed in a letter of intent to change the name of the Amsterdam ArenA to the Johan Cruyff Arena", said a statement on Ajax's website.

The Amsterdam Arena stadium is to be renamed the Johan Cruijff Arena after the city's most famous footballer, who died a year ago.

The board in charge of the stadium, as well as the Amsterdam mayor, joined with Ajax in the decision to rename the stadium.

"Jordi Cruyff has stated that he was pleased and honored by the letter of intent to change the name on behalf of the family".

The agreement announced Tuesday is expected to be finalized within six months. Finally, on what would have been his 70th birthday, Ajax have confirmed plans for the stadium to be called the Johan Cruijff Arena. He ended his playing career at Feyenoord. Cruyff never won a major trophy with the Netherlands, but he was their unquestioned star as they went to the 1974 World Cup final and took third place at the Euros two years later.

After retirement, he made a name for himself as a successful manager with Ajax and Barcelona.

Cruyff died aged 68 on March 24, 2016 after a brief struggle with cancer, triggering global mourning for a man recognised as leaving a huge footballing legacy.
