Mike Pence: It's time for North Korea to 'get the message'

Japan seeks to salvage TPP after US withdrawal from trade deal

A U.S. defense official told CNN News on Thursday (20 April) that in addition to putting its bombers on high alert, the Chinese military has also intensified maintenance of its aircraft, apparently to bring them to full readiness.

It's Tokyo's oldest temple, and a highly popular tourist site that attracts crowds from around the world.

The video then cuts to a graphic that features a badly damaged United States flag in front of dozens of white crosses, symbolising the lives that would be lost at their hands.

"Let me assure you that under President Trump's leadership, our resolve has never been stronger, our commitment to this historic alliance with the courageous people of South Korea has never been stronger, and with your help and God's help, freedom will ever prevail on this peninsula".

The US, along with South Korea, should suspend annual military exercises that antagonize North Korea in exchange for Pyongyang halting its nuclear program, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in early March.

China wants to cool tempers and would like to see a return to multilateral negotiations with North Korea.

"North Korea is the most unsafe and urgent threat to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific", Pence said.

"We seek peace always as a country, as does Japan".

The dialogue was set up by President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the Japanese leader's visit to the U.S.in February. Beijing says the system threatens its own security by allowing the U.S.to monitor flights and other activity in northeastern China. USA president Donald Trump, however, may not.

The economic talks could eventually result in a bilateral trade deal between the two economies.

China may be getting fed up with continued nuclear bluster from long-time ally North Korea and tilting toward the United States.

Pence reassured Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday that the US considers its alliance with Japan to be a cornerstone of security in the region. It has said it has developed a missile that can strike the mainland United States, but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering the necessary technology, including miniaturising a nuclear warhead.

"Today we are beginning a process of economic dialog", he said in Tokyo.

The focus of his trip is expected to shift in Japan to trade. In the middle of him talking with North Korea I'm going to hit them with currency manipulation?

Trump repeated his criticism of critics who pointed out that he changed his position on China, saying his policies toward the country were successful and resulted in persuading China to take a harder line on North Korea.
