UN strongly condemns North Korean missile launch after delay

The council said North Korea's illegal missile and nuclear activities "are greatly increasing tension in the region and beyond" and expressed "utmost concern" at its "highly destabilizing behavior and flagrant and provocative defiance" of six United Nations sanctions resolutions.

The latest bellicose statement follows North Korea's weekend display of military hardware in a parade marking the birthday of its founder Kim Il Sung and two attempted missile tests, one of which failed.

The UN Security Council on Thursday unanimously adopted a press statement strongly condemning North Korea's latest missile launch.

Council statements are adopted by consensus among all 15 members.

Russian Federation wanted to include language contained in a previous statement stressing the need to achieve a solution through dialogue, according to council diplomats. Vice President Mike Pence, on a tour of Asian allies, has said repeatedly an "era of strategic patience" with North Korea is over.

For its part, China says the system's powerful radar is a threat to its security.The North has said it has developed a missile that can strike the mainland United States, but officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering the necessary technology, including miniaturising a nuclear warhead.RUSSIA, U.S.

Tillerson's comments came Wednesday at the State Department, where he said the U.S.is considering many options to put pressure on North Korea. The US has been unnerved by North Korea's advancing missile and nuclear programs and has dispatched a military strike group to the Korean Peninsula.

"We will defeat any attack and meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective American response".

North Korea was removed from the list of state sponsors of terror in 2008 as a last-ditch move to save a nuclear deal that was near collapse.

"We believe that it is absolutely essential... that everybody is involved in order to make sure that everything is done so that the threat represented by the development in relation to missiles and in relation to nuclear capability - not become a threat to the worldwide community", said Guterres.

The daily points out that US threats are meant to keep North Korea from improving its nuclear capabilities.
