Starbucks hue- and flavor-shifting beverage won't last long

The Unicorn Frappuccino is here

The colorful drink needs to do more than get people posting photos to Instagram, however.

Wednesday, the coffee chain announced the official release of its Unicorn Frappuccino blended beverage. In other words, expect to see a lot of filtered pink and blue in your newsfeed in the next few days.

The crème Frappuccino is made with a mysterious blend of sweet dusting pink powder, mango syrup and sour blue drizzle and topped off with vanilla whipped cream, and more pink and blue powder. The whipped cream up top is dusted with sparkly sprinkles of intensely sour sugar, and the blue stuff in the cup is actual unicorn semen ... Give your bevvie a little stir and suddenly the color will change to pink. And so a simple #UnicornFrappucino tag led us to a whole variety of photos, and they in turn have us leaping for joy, in true unicorn spirit.

Those who tried the Unicorn Frappuccino on Day 1 fell into a number of camps when rating the taste, experience, and their deepest feelings. Limited-time drinks are increasingly a staple at Starbucks (SBUX), which is rolling out new drinks and short-term offerings as a way to entice consumers into its stores.

So what's in this magical looking drink? Since the blue color is sporadic, it truly stands out.

"Like its mythical namesake, the Unicorn Frappuccino blended crème comes with a bit of magic", touts the Starbucks Newsroom.

What's in this bewitching, color changing drink? "Now Starbucks is taking the trend to a new level with its first Unicorn Frappuccino® blended beverage, available starting Wednesday, April 19, through Sunday, April 23, while supplies last". Even if the tangy and sweet flavor isn't for you, it will be the flawless addition to your Instagram feed. Gothamist staffer Dave Colon described the taste as "melted Italian ice", perhaps picking up on the mango flavor that was indeed evident.
