Roof construction delays Mercedes Benz Stadium opening

Continued problems constructing the retractable roof at the new Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta could lead to the scheduled demolition of the Georgia Dome being delayed, according to multiple reports.

The new $1.4 billion, 71,000-seat arena features a mechanized canopy system created to reduce capacity for soccer, though small numbers at the gate haven't been an issue for Atlanta United at the Georgia Tech football stadium. Their scheduled July 30 match will now take place on July 29 at Bobby Dodd Stadium and games with the Galaxy and Minnesota United will be rescheduled for dates that have yet to be determined. Kickoff is 5 p.m. If there's another setback, there's a chance that regular season games could be threatened.

The repeated delays have frustrated some of Atlanta United's supporters, who took to social media to vent Tuesday.

"We wanted to hold onto that until the last possible moment", Cannon said, "because we were thinking about our fans". "Fortunately, it's just one more game, one more chance to be on national TV on Fox Sports and a game against our rivals".

Two more matches-against Minnesota United on August 13 and the LA Galaxy on August 19-are being rescheduled for later, undetermined dates at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

"No concerns about the operability of the roof have ever been expressed to us by the design or construction teams", Cannon said. Both of United's home games have been played at Bobby Dodd Stadium to sold-out crowds.

The Dome, which is adjacent to the new stadium, was originally scheduled to be demolished this summer.

"Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a spectacular building the people of Atlanta are going to be very proud of for a long time", Holder said. Delays in the construction of the building's roof have pushed back the opening date of the stadium and now the MLS team won't play in their new home until September 9. He learned of the change over the weekend.

"We haven't asked the question too often because we know it will be ready by January 8", Hancock said during a visit to Atlanta last week. "We are striving for the best fan experience in the world. You can expect to receive that refund back to your account within the next week". This was communicated to them today via email.

Questions also loom about whether the roof will be completed and operable when the stadium opens.
