Jones could return to UFC with Cormier title rematch

Jimi Manuwa and Daniel Cormier

The troubled 29-year-old was slated to face Cormier in a title unification bout in UFC 200's featured attraction before getting yanked from the rematch just three days before showtime due to his positive drug test.

Cormier beat Anthony Johnson for the light heavyweight title at UFC 187, after it was vacated by Jones, and successfully defended the belt for a second time against Johnson at UFC 210 this month.

"That's a huge problem right now and that's why I said he won't headline a card", White told "The Herd" on Wednesday while discussing Jones.

Alexander Gustafsson believes he has some unfinished business with Jon Jones.

"July 29 I will be in Anaheim and I'm bringing my UFC title with me", Cormier said. "I think he needs a warm-up fight, and I think he knows he needs a warm-up fight". The only question: Who is Cormier going to defend it against?

"If Jon Jones is ready to fight on July 29, we'll see the Jones versus Cormier rematch, finally", White told ESPN.com.

Both Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier have indicated they'd like to meet again in the octagon soon. Preux at UFC 197 in April of previous year, and while Jones won relatively comfortably by unanimous decision, it was an uninspired performance in comparison to the high standards we've come to expect from him. After all, Cormier is his greatest rival, so what would it say if "Bones" conceded he needed to fight someone else, of lesser ability, first? If that happens, then Cormier - Manuwa could be next.

Jones' camp has not responded to ESPN's request for comments.

White however, has provided some clarity on the situation, stating that if Jones is ready to fight, the much awaited rematch could take place as soon as UFC 214.

"Let's go! I wanna fight you!" "Where's the contract. This [is] light work".
