Daniel Cormier wants Jimi Manuwa fight before rematch with Jon Jones

Jimi Manuwa and Daniel Cormier

Earlier this week, UFC president Dana White revealed that Jones has the option to return at UFC 214 on July 29 to face Cormier with the light heavyweight title on the line.

One man now sitting outside of the title talk is the UFC's number one ranked light heavyweight, Alexander Gustafsson.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is being penciled in for UFC 214 in July.

But ever since Anderson's head bounced off the mat on March 18, the man who delivered the fight-ending left hook has been calling for a title shot. a lot.

Perhaps this declaration about being locked into the co-main event slot will put Jones in the position where he would rather take a tune up fight against a different opponent before finally facing Cormier in a rematch. "I'll beat [you straight] boxing chump!" I don't go to decision.

Cormier, 38, is a former Olympic wrestler with two UFC title defenses. Jones will only just become eligible to return at that point, and the logistics of putting the fight together for that date won't allow it.

"One-hundred percent", Gustafsson said, without needing a second to think about it. "One-hundred percent-if Jones wants a welcome party back to the UFC, then I'm happy to do that".

Don't let Jones's nonchalance fool you, though.

White is willing to give Jones a shot at reclaiming the belt he was stripped of in April 2015, should he opt against taking a warm up fight.

After getting knocked out by the now-retired Anthony Johnson in September 2015 at UFC 191, Manuwa has bounced back with two "Performance of the Night" KO wins of his own, the latest coming against Corey Anderson last month at UFC Fight Night 107.

"He's thrown away his opportunities which is sad, but when the time comes for him to come back, I'll gladly fight him".
