Near Tirupati Truck Driver Runs Into Pole Hits Crowd Some Electrocuted

In Andhra Pradesh at least 14 people were killed and 20 injured in a ghastly mishap which occurred near Yerpedu Police Stateio in Chittoor district this afternoon, when a heavily laden truck rammed into roadside shops. The terrible incident took place when a speeding truck with heavy load lost control and hit an electric pole before crushing people under its wheel.

Eyewitnesses on local TV described heart-rending scenes and mangled bodies as the bus first hit a vehicle and the electricity pole before crashing into the crowd.

The truck driver and his assistant, who were suspected to be drunk, fled from the spot, the police said. All the injured have been taken to Tirupati Ruia Hospital.

The incident happened at around 1:45pm, when a large number of people had gathered in front of the Yerpedu police station located on the Putalapattu-Nayudupeta state highway to stage a dharna to demand action against illegal sand mining in the area. The truck was travelling from Srikalahasti to Tirupati.

The driver of the lorry has also been admitted to hospital with injuries. She said two police officers were among those injured.

Meanwhile, Minister for Health and Medical Services Kamineni Srinivas directed the district officials to extend all support to the victims and provide all the necessary medical treatment for the injured.

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased.

Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa has expressed shock over the incident.
