Amazon Announces Entrance in Australia

The confirmation comes on the back of a number of different leaks regarding Amazon have come forth including Amazon shopping for physical locations for their massive warehouses here in Australia, which SMH reported on a year ago.

The company started competing with streaming services Netflix and Stan with the recent Australian launch of Amazon Prime Video, bringing Top Gear redux "The Grand Tour" to Aussie fans.

Although Amazon has not discussed any plans to set up in New Zealand and there is no speculation that is imminent, Kiwi retailers are concerned by its move into Australia and what they say is an uneven playing-field.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley have dubbed Amazon the "country killer", warning its retail clients: "While Amazon might take time to build up momentum in this country, it hangs like the sword of Damocles over corporate Australia".

Amazon.com plans to launch an online emporium in Australia, the e-commerce giant's first full-fledged retail foray in the Southern Hemisphere.

A spokesperson for the retail giant stated via email that Amazon is now planning "to bring thousands of new jobs to Australia, millions of dollars in additional investment, and to empower small Australian businesses through Amazon Marketplace".

"Sales through Amazon Marketplaces now represent 50 percent of all items sold on Amazon websites globally".

SYDNEY, April 20 Global retail juggernaut Amazon.com Inc said on Thursday it plans to offer its retail shopfront service in Australia, confirming rumours which have circulated for years about its plans to expand into the world's 12th-largest economy.

Retail NZ has been calling for the New Zealand government to urgently follow suit, to prevent Amazon shipping goods to New Zealanders from its Australian warehouses tax-free.

"We are excited to bring thousands of new jobs to Australia, millions of dollars in additional investment, and to empower small Australian businesses through Amazon Marketplace", Amazon said.

In a statement to the press this morning, Amazon announced that they were looking forward to bringing "low prices, vast selection, and fast delivery" to more Australians over the coming years.
