Google Image Search Now Showing Product Recommendations

Similar Items now supports handbags, sunglasses and shoes, and Google plans to add other apparel plus home and garden categories within the next few months. The shopping results are formally being called "similar Items".

Julia E, product manager on Google Image Search, announced on the Google search blog that you need to use schema.org product metadata on your pages and schema.org/Product markup to make sure your products are eligible for inclusion on these image results. It identifies products in lifestyle images and displays matching products to the user.

This feature enables users to browse and shop inspirational fashion photography and find product info about items they're interested in.

Similar items is live now on mobile internet browsers, as well as the Android Google Search app, with the company planning more expansions later this year. In much the same way, this opens the door for Google to bring in more revenue, as it'll likely take a cut of sales its image search refers.

Test your pages with Google's Structured Data Testing Tool to verify that the product markup is formatted correctly.

The search giant said this week that its debuted a new feature called Similar Items, which is meant to make it easier for people to buy clothing and some fashion accessories when they search for photos.

See your images on image search by issuing the query "site:yourdomain.com".

Products that have a valid markup will display product information when clicked upon.

Along with detailed instructions on how to use the feature, Google says it's important to ensure that the Web pages have an image reference number, products with names, image, price and currency, and metadata on the host page. Google also says that over the next few months they'll be expanding the feature's identification skills to other types of products as well.
