Denver's Most Popular Dog Breeds

Renowned for their loyalty, confidence and protective instincts, Rotties were America's second-most-popular dog in 1997 but faded to 17th within a decade, as some small breeds surged for a time.

The golden retriever ranked third both on the Long Island and US lists of the most popular dog breeds in 2016.

"The Labrador Retriever has a strong hold on the top spot, and doesn't show signs of giving it up anytime soon", said AKC Vice President Gina DiNardo.

The quizzical, push-faced dogs had been out of the top 10 for almost a century before making it back the last two years, while their larger bulldog cousins have hit their highest-ever ranking.

Those smarts are helping Charlie in his training by the organization America's VetDogs to become a service dog, where he will help support military veterans and first responders.

Poodles were seventh and Rottweilers eighth, each jumping one spot higher than the last lineup. Also in the top 10 are Great Danes and Siberian Huskies.

The Cavalier King Charles spaniel holds the No. 8 spot on the list of Long Island's most popular dog breeds, but didn't make the nationwide top 10 list.

Rottweilers were slowly making their way up the national registry of purebred dog pedigrees. But DiNardo says the total number of registered dogs grew 8 percent past year.
