Mom found dead after infant pulled from lake

Infant hospitalized after vehicle goes into lake near Highland

Two people died Thursday in what a coroner called "inter-related" cases involving a fatal house fire near St. Louis, followed shortly by a baby found alive inside a vehicle in a lake.

"One little thing that went wrong may have been a totally different outcome", said Zobrist, who suffered hypothermia during the rescue.

Speaking to a news conference he said he swam 75 feet until he reached the auto and initially thought Julian was a doll floating inside the SUV but soon realised it was a baby when he reached inside the vehicle.

The pair have six other children who are safe and managed to escape Thursday's fire at their home.

Madison County Sheriff John Lakin says a motorist called 911 Thursday morning to report a auto heading down a hill toward Silver Lake in Highland, Illinois. Once the baby showed signs of life and spit out water, he immediately started swimming back.

A woman found dead in a lake near St. Louis where an infant was rescued hours earlier has been identified as the child's mother.

Police say the baby's mother, Cristy Campbell, 32, of Glen Carbon drove a blue-gray Nissan Armada SUV, with the baby inside, off a two-lane highway and into Silver Lake near Highland.

"Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn is reporting that his agency is investigating two inter-related incident that involves the deaths of two Madison County residents".

Officials said the baby was lifeless, but Zobrist began to do CPR.

An infant is being treated at a St. Louis hospital after the auto the child was in rolled into a lake.

"At first I thought it was just a doll", Zobrist told reporters during a news conference Friday. Preliminary autopsy results determined she died of "environmental exposure and drowning", Nonn said.

But the team was delayed by a train blocking access to the lake, so Zobrist swam back to shore with the baby in one arm.

Before they married, Justin Campbell was charged with domestic abuse in 2005. He was accused of attacking Cristy Campbell, known then as Cristy Brueggemann, when she was pregnant by slapping her in the head. She filed for legal separation in September 2010.

In April 2012, Cristy Campbell obtained an emergency protection order against her husband and filed for divorce, alleging in court papers that he "abuses me on a weekly basis", including punching and choking her. He allegedly punched and choked her. The couple had divorced in 2013 but posts by Ms Campbell indicated that Julian was also Mr Campbell's child. He declined to elaborate. All seven children have now been placed with relatives, a spokeswoman with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services tells PEOPLE.
