According to local media reports, the attacker apparently thought that since Matthew is an Indian, he must be a Hindu or a Muslim and hence he can not offer mass.

A woman, who asked not to be identified, witnessed the attack and said: "There was some shouting and lots of movement in the back of the church". Father Tomy's first thoughts have been for the parishioners and the school community. "He said, 'I've just been stabbed.' As I removed his garment I could see quite a bit of blood".

The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne has condemned the attack and has termed it appalling. "People should never be treated like this". Mathew has been parish priest of the Melbourne church since late 2014 and Thamarassery diocese authorities said he would continue his duty as priest at that church.

The eyewitnesses to the incident reportedly claimed that the accused was trying to meet Mathew even before the incident for a long time.

He was in a stable condition when taken to hospital on Sunday.

The attacker was nabbed by the local police and has been charged with intentionally and recklessly causing injury and bailed to appear in the Broadmeadows Magistrates' Court on June 13.

India priest is recovering from injuries in hospital and he was serving as priest of St Mathews Parish in Melbourne for past four years.

"At this stage it is too early to tell (motive) and the investigation is ongoing", Detective Senior Constable Rhiannon Norton said at a press conference.

Before the man was arrested, police told reporters they believed the incident was isolated.
