Boise State down two starters against IL

The next day, he joined another school.

After Oklahoma State's 92-91 first-round loss to MI on Friday, Underwood returned to Stillwater with his team. After a 20-loss season that led to the dismissal of coach Travis Ford, the Cowboys appeared to have a basketball program that was trending upward again. It was then that he matched wits with Lon Kruger and Bill Self, and he saw what it meant to play against IL. And nobody at MI is complaining about Beilein after three Sweet 16s in the last five years, a level IL realistically can reach. He had taken the Cowboys to the NCAA Tournament, but he had only been in Stillwater for a year and never let himself think about the possibility of coaching at IL.

Underwood had taken the Oklahoma State position after three successful seasons at Stephen F. Austin.

Two days later, Underwood was introduced to an energized crowd in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

If Sutton sounds like a familiar surname, particularly in Oklahoma State basketball lore, that's because Scott Sutton is the youngest son of legendary coach Eddie Sutton.

"I dream big", Underwood said. "We are privileged. You are privileged".

"... I couldn't be happier".

But what the former Duke player, who has been outspoken in the past about the NCAA and its treatment of student-athletes, did have a problem with in light of IL hiring Underwood on Saturday afternoon is college administrators.

"Coaching basketball at the University of IL is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", Underwood said in a statement. They've got really good players and boy did they play hard in their last game.

"I thought I had a good enough relationship with him that we were going to work it out and ultimately he would be the basketball coach here for a long time", Holder said Saturday night.

Maybe Brad Underwood wanted to leave Oklahoma State all along.

Presumably, the contract would have been reworked by Oklahoma State as rumors swirled about other schools' interest in Underwood, but the Cowboys won't get that chance.

IL made a splash Saturday afternoon after hiring a new head coach: Brad Underwood.

Several inside OSU's athletic department were left in the dark until the news appeared on social media.

"It's the weakest part of the defense, analytically", Underwood said Monday at the State Farm Center. Caleb Swanigan could be the national player of the year, and Vincent Edwards has been reliably terrific over the past few weeks. And if Whitman didn't make that call, perhaps Underwood would've left Stillwater for another opening.

"We put it in 20 years ago with Brad and ran it for five or six years pretty successfully at Western", Kerwin said on the phone. "We are trying to digest this news". "Last Wednesday, we picked up the phone for the first time and talked with Brad's representative".
