Auburn trustees select new university president

ISU president could leave; speculation of departure swirls

The Trustees of Auburn University have named the university's 19th president.

Iowa's Board of Regents chose Leath to become Iowa State's 15th president in January 2012 and he's overseen massive growth in the past five years.

Last month, officials decided against filing criminal charges against Leath following an investigation into whether he broke the law with his use of school aircraft.

Leath reimbursed ISU for the cost of 52 training flights, as well as for costs associated with several out-of-state trips.

Some may wonder why the President of an AAU (Association of American Universities) school may leave that post for a non-AAU post, but I would like to think that shows just how attractive Auburn University is as a research and academic institution.

Members of the university community have raised concerns about if the process was transparency of the selection process. "We wish President Leath and his wife, Janet, the best at Auburn University".

"To the trustees, I appreciate your trust and confidence", Leath said in the meeting after being asked if he'd like to speak. The two-time Auburn graduate is known for engaging with students, supporting faculty and creating a strong university partnership with the local community.

"The contribution Jay and Susie Gogue made to Auburn is immeasurable", said Charles McCrary, president pro tem of the Auburn Board. He was paid $647,711.96 in the 2016 fiscal year, according to university records.

The objective of a university is its students and the administration should always keep that at the forefront, Leath said.

It's hard to say what Dr. Leath's appointment may mean for Athletics. "He cares about students, and he cares about faculty". In addition, I will keep you updated during this time of change. I'm sure this played a large part in Auburn's decision.

"We'll be fully dedicated to moving this university forward, but we can't do it alone", Leath said.
