Sick Kyrgios out of Indian Wells clash with Federer

The Australian catapulted into the Indian Wells quarterfinals with an upset over Novak Djokovic, setting up a showdown with none other than Roger Federer.

Australian Kyrgios had beaten Djokovic in the quarter-finals in Acapulco nearly two weeks ago in their first career meeting, and repeated the feat on Wednesday to reach the last eight, where he will face Federer.

Federer suffered a blip when he was ousted from Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships last month after second round loss to unseeded Evgeny Donskoy right after a title-winning campaign at the Australian Open but the 18-time Grand Slam champion has hit form again and has not dropped a set yet in the ongoing tournament. At this stage we think it's food poisoning, and I'm praying that it is nothing more.

'Unfortunately I am unable to play today [Friday] due to sickness.

"I don't take this decision lightly, these are the matches we train for but I'm in no fit state to take to the court".

"I'm sorry to the fans that I'm unable to take to the court but I have to put my health first".

Nick Kyrgios returns a shot to Novak Djokovic during their match at the 2017 BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, USA, 15 March 2017.

He will face either American Jack Sock or No. 4 seed Kei Nishikori on Saturday. "I have to get back to work in a couple of days".

The eighth seed saw off fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3 6-2 and will meet Czech Karolina Pliskova, after she beat French Open champion Garbine Muguruza 7-6 7-6.
