Why Hyundai's New Hybrid Could Dethrone the Toyota Prius

"Ioniq will attract an entirely new group of eco- and efficiency-oriented buyers in the USA market", said Mike O'Brien, vice president of Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. The overall figure is referred to as an Environmental Damage Index (EDX). The BMW i3 (which is considered a compact car) was a close second to the Hyundai.

The ACEEE is a non-profit organization located in the United States and concentrating on the introduction of eco-friendly policy, an increase in eco-friendly investment and the innovation of green technology.

It was all based on green scores calculated with the EDX. Scores are from a life-cycle analysis taking into account emissions from driving, manufacturing, and eventual recycling of the vehicles.

According to reports, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric boasts a fuel economy certification of 191 kilometers per full charge. The Hyundai Ioniq Electric not only took home the award this year, but it is also the best scoring vehicle in the history of the ACEEE list. Those prices don't include the federal $7500 tax credit.

The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq comes with a price tag that may put the Toyota Prius and the Leaf out of business.

The price for its hybrid electric and all-electric models was revealed by Hyundai on Tuesday. From there, the SEL asks $24,785 and the Ioniq Limited retails for $28,335. Prius claims 58 mpg city, 53 mpg on the highway, which means its combined rating is slightly less than Ioniq's.

Hyundai Ioniq hybrid models are powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor/generator integrated within a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission; total output is 139 horsepower. It will be available in April.

The hybrid is available now, the all-electric version will be available in April, and the plug-in will be available in the fourth quarter at US dealerships.
