A day after announcing sale of over 10 million hybrid cars worldwide, Toyota underlined its commitment to its hybrid fleet of vehicles in India by launching the fourth-generation Prius at a starting price of Rs 39.96 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi).

But as more automakers develop electric cars in response to tightening global emissions regulations, Toyota late previous year set up a new division to speed up development of long-range electric cars. The new generation model was launched internationally past year and was also showcased by the Japanese carmaker at the 2016 Auto Expo in India.

Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation has launched the redesigned Prius PHV and sales will begin immediately across all dealerships in the country, informed the company in an official statement.

Toyota has been working on enhancing its product lineup significantly, and is positioning plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) as the pillar of next-generation environmental vehicles after hybrid vehicles. Toyota says the the new Prius is more fun to drive as well, an attribute the vehicle isn't exactly associated with the auto.

Exterior design highlights include a new face, wheels and completely revised rear-end bringing but has the same silhouette that has defined the Prius range since it was launched in 1997. The gasoline engine comes paired to an electric motor that churns out 71 bhp of power and 163 Nm of torque. The Prius comes with the eco-friendly Hybrid Synergy Drive system and returns an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 26.27 kmpl.

While rivals including Nissan Motor Co and Tesla have marketed electric cars for almost a decade, Toyota has promoted fuel cell-powered vehicles as the most sensible next-generation option to hybrids, although a lack of hydrogen fuelling stations remains a major hurdle for mass consumption.
