Naturipe calls on industry to help fight wildfires in Chile

11 dead as Chile wildfires rage in 10 regions

28 de enero de 2017, 11:53Santiago, Chile, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) Chilean President Michelle Bachelet thanked the global support for the fight against the wave of forest fires in the south-central part of the country.

She added that 43 people had been detained "for their possible responsibility in the forest fires". This has forced the evacuation of at least 4,000 people, according to officials.

More help is needed - with the destruction of crops, farms and the livelihood of our extended growing family of growers all across various regions of Chile, it is pivotal that the produce industry as a whole stands together in sending aid and salvation.

Nearly 480,000 hectares has been destroyed in the fires and 35 people have been arrested in relation to the blazes. Authorities confirmed they had detained 30 people for suspicion of premeditated arson.

Chile's central and southern regions have been ravaged by the fires for over a fortnight. Chile's capital, Santiago-which is several hundred miles away-is shrouded in haze.

Emergency services have battled the flames non-stop for days, with thousands of firefighters on the ground and helicopters and small planes in the air.

Other areas were also still at danger, forcing police and military to evacuate residents and close roads.

More than 100 wildfires have broken out in the past few weeks and have spread rapidly across vegetation that has been dried by unseasonably high temperatures.
