BJP veteran Sunderlal Patwa dies, MP CM Chouhan calls him 'father figure'

Former Madhya Pradesh CM Sunder Lal Patwa

A number of leaders from the BJP and the Congress paid tributes to senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Sunderlal Patwa, who passed away on Wednesday. It is hard to imagine politics of the state without Patwa ji.

"He was a hardworking and a dedicated leader whose good work as the MP CM will be remembered", the Prime Minister, who spent almost half-an-hour at the state BJP headquarters here where the body of the former Jansangh leader was kept for the people to pay respects, said in his tweet.

His nephew Surendra Patwa is now a minister in the present BJP-led state government.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who used to often call on Patwa to seek guidance, described him as a father-figure.

Patwa, 92, died today morning at a local hospital after suffering a heart attack. He breathed his last early on Wednesday morning.

"His death is an irreparable loss for the state", Mr Chouhan said. Sunderlal Patwa has served as the chief minister of the state twice.

He was the first a member of the Janata party when he first served at the Chief Minister for two and then became a BJP leader during his second term. "He was a hardworking & dedicated leader whose good work as MP CM will be remembered", Modi said in a tweet. Patwa was first elected to the Lok Sabha via bye-poll in Chhindwara in 1977 and the next year he lost from the same constituency in the general elections.
