Officers fired upon for 2nd night in a row in Philadelphia

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser says he is told a UPenn police officer and a female Sgt. from the 22nd District were shot.

Ross said police found a rambling note at the scene that said the gunman hated police and probation officers and it mentions a "particular probation officer". A relative of the suspect aided police in finding a location where investigators believe Glenn had been staying most recently. Inside, Ross said, police found more ammunition. Investigators were trying to track the origins of the weapon, which had an obliterated serial number.

Three police officers then cornered Glenn in an alley. He then opened fire into a vehicle, killing a 25-year-old female, Ross said. He said Glenn was well-known to the police department.

At 49th and Sansom, the gunman fired at two people sitting in a auto, striking a man and a woman in the chest, Ross said. He then fired into a bar, injuring a security guard, wounded a woman, and fired into a vehicle, hitting a man and woman. That woman died just before 2 a.m. Saturday. As WHYY reported, a University of Pennsylvania police officer was wounded in the exchange of fire.

Since then, officials found a freaky letter left from Glenn.

All she could do was lean into the passenger seat to try to avoid the fusillade of gunfire, Ross said.

The wild chase and shootout through the streets of Philadelphia began about 11:20 p.m. Friday when Sgt. Sylvia Young, a 19-year police veteran, was ambushed while sitting in her patrol auto in west Philadelphia; she was shot a number of times in the arm and protective vest, Ross said. Luckily, she is in stable condition and will be okay.

A gunman carrying a rambling note titled "Doomed People" fired 18 shots at an unsuspecting Philadelphia police sergeant Friday night, then tore through the city's west side with his gun, killing a woman and injuring several others. The suspect was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m.

Commissioner Richard Ross said, "This is a completely freakish situation".

The Associated Press identified that injured officer as Ed Miller, who formerly worked for the Philadelphia Police Department. Both were in stable condition Saturday.

Then, the suspect fired five times into a bar, "hitting a security guard in the leg, then grabbed a woman and used her as a shield before shooting her in the leg", according to member station WHYY.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross says officers began chasing the man late Friday after he ambushed Sgt. Sylvia Young, striking her several times in the in the arm and protective vest. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney spoke to Action News on his meeting Saturday with the police officers: "I had the opportunity to be with both police officers this evening, and their families". She was reportedly shot up to eight times but survived. Glenn continued to flee eastbound on Sansom when he approached a 2011 Nissan Altima, occupied by a 36-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman. Two police officers and three others - two men and a woman - also were wounded.
