Jason Falconer, an off-duty police officer from nearby Avon, killed the man. All of those who were injured have been released from a hospital.

The incident is now being investigated as a potential act of terrorism.

The Islamic State terror group claimed responsibility for the knife rampage at a Minnesota mall on Saturday, according to an ISIS-linked news agency. He had been acting strangely before the attack, they said. Thousands of people were about to participate in the 5K race in Seaside Park.

Speaking from New York on Monday, President Obama said investigators do not see a connection between the St. Cloud mall stabbings and the bombings in New York City and New Jersey.

It doesn't appear anyone else was involved in the attack, which began at about 8 p.m. and ended minutes later, Anderson has said.

In response to this weekend's stabbing, members of the Muslim and Somali communities held a news conference Sunday to mourn the victims and call for unity.

St. Cloud is a city of 67,000 residents that is located 65 miles (105 kilometers) from the state's largest metropolitan area, Minneapolis-St. Since 2014, nine Somali-Americans from Minnesota have been convicted at trial or pleaded guilty in a plot to join the Islamic State by traveling to Syria. The possibility of an attack on US soil has been a major concern for law enforcement. He asked me to convey his high regard for the work together by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.

If Saturday's stabbings are ultimately deemed a terrorist act, it would be the first carried out by a Somali on US soil, said Karen Greenburg, director of the Center on National Security at Fordham University School of Law.

St. Cloud Mayor David Kleis said an attack like Saturday's is the type of worry that keeps him "up at night", but Dayton urged people in St. Cloud and around the state to "rise above" such violence. It is not clear if the extremist group had planned the attack or even knew about it beforehand. In the past, IS has claimed attacks that are not believed to have been planned by its central leadership.

Ahmed says Dahir was born in Somalia and lived in the US the last 15 years. Local activists also identified Dahir Adan as Somali.

St. Cloud police say that while they were reviewing security footage as part of their investigation into Saturday's stabbing at Crossroads Center mall, they found another man had been hurt. The mall was closed Sunday while authorities investigated Saturday night's incident, which ended when an off-duty police officer shot and killed the suspect.

Police had had three previous encounters with the attacker, mostly for minor traffic violations, Anderson said. Spokesman Adam Hammer said Adan's intended major was information systems, a computer-related field.

One of the nine people wounded in a stabbing at a central Minnesota mall says the man who carried out the attack showed no emotion and his eyes looked blank.

The victims have been described as a 22-year-old Big Lake man; a man, 24, from Willmar; man, 53, from Albany; man 45, from St. Cloud; man, 20, from St. Cloud; girl, 15, from Big Lake; woman, 50, from Kimball; man, 29, from St. Cloud; and man, 31, from Avon. "There was a bunch of people running into the J.C. Penney mall entrance, and they were just screaming that someone was going around the mall stabbing people, and that there was blood everywhere". The suspect's family identified him as Aden, a Somali-American student at St. Cloud State University. He praised Falconer saying, "He clearly prevented additional injuries and potentially loss of life". "Officer Falconer was there at the right time and the right place".

The Crossroads Center mall reopened Monday after city leaders held a meeting with employees. Sydney Weires, 18, and two of her friends were shopping when the stabbings happened.
