Charles and Bosa Among Inactive Players on First NFL Sunday

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Austin Seferian Jenkins celebrates his touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday Sept. 11 2016 in Atlanta

Charles has been at practice for a few weeks but did not participate in any preseason games. However, a lack of talent on the perimeter will limit what San Diego can achieve, and will be forced to be one dimensional, thus allowing the Chiefs weakness to be covered and shrouded in the awfulness that is the Chargers.

The defense carried that team at times, but the return of dynamic running back Jamaal Charles from last year's knee injury to join a solid receiving corps has Kansas City thinking about being more rounded this year.

Our models assume Charles will play against the San Diego Chargers in Week 1, albeit on a limited basis, projecting him for 8 carries for 39 yards for 0.36 touchdowns, as well as 1 catch for 11 yards through the air.

Melvin Gordon, who failed to score a single touchdown as a rookie a year ago, broke off a 17-yard run on their first drive and capped a six-play, 75-yard march with a 1-yard score that put the Chargers ahead 7-3 midway through the first quarter. Kansas City outscored San Diego by a two-game total of 43-6.

The Chargers will need to find a way to pressure Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith better to pull off what would be an early-season upset. On the ground, Darrin Reaves rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown in 17 attempts while Knile Davis added 58 yards and a touchdown in 14 attempts. Kansas City's star running back is still working his way back from a torn ACL that cost him a majority of the 2015 season, and have no plans to rush him back on the field.

Everything changed in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters held a black-gloved fist aloft during the national anthem in a salute reminiscent of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Marshall was a college teammate at Nevada of Colin Kaepernick, the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers who began the pro sports movement to raise awareness for social injustice.

Allen missed the final eight games last season with a lacerated kidney, and now could be out the rest of this season.

Chiefs linebacker Sam Barrington left in the second half with a hamstring injury.
