Pennsylvania IDs its first case of sexually transmitted Zika

Updates on Zika emerge each day, often emphasizing the severity of the epidemic.

This stark statistical reality was discovered by a team of researchers from Brazil's Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, which analyzed hospital records across Brazil from 2008, well before Zika arrived, until the end of February 2016.

In Northeast Brazil, which officials have considered the epicenter of the Zika outbreak, congenital malformations of the nervous system (CNS) occurred in a mean value of 40 in 100,000 live births until September 2015.

"Our results show that the rates of hospitalization in the Northeast region for some neuropathies were subject to abrupt changes beginning in mid-2014, when it is believed that Zika virus was introduced to the country", the authors wrote. Those rates went up even more starting in November 2015, when the first public health warnings about microcephaly - a condition present at birth in which a baby's head is abnormally small - came out. 2015 statistics of 170 defects in each 100,000 births. Almost half of these hospitalizations were in the northeast.

AAP will use these funds to provide technical assistance and education, including tele-consultation, to clinicians at community health centers and other health care sites in the United States and its territories, including Puerto Rico and South Florida, providing care to children who are or may be impacted by Zika virus. A group of health experts recently called for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to be postponed or cancelled due to the Zika threat but the WHO (World Health Organization) rejected the proposal.

The CDC published the Zika study, which ultimately found " an unprecedented and significant rise in the hospitalization rate for congenital malformations of the nervous system, Guillain-Barré syndrome, encephalitis, myelitis, and encephalomyelitis".

The USDA noted that the new information was the Foreign Agricultural Service's "understanding" of China's measures affecting US cargo and control of the Zika virus and not official USDA guidance, adding that things could change as "further clarifications and updates are made available" from Chinese authorities.

In adults, Zika infections have also been linked to a rare neurological syndrome known as Guillain-Barre, as well as other neurological disorders.
