Burglary Suspect Dead In Brooklyn Police Shooting

An active crime scene in Bensonhurst following a police-involved shooting

The burglars were robbing a house on 78th Street between Bay Parkway and Stillwell Avenue a little after 6:30 p.m., police said.

The people in the home were unharmed, police say.

"Officers responded to a burglary in progress, where they observed a male fleeing the location", the department said in a statement.

The NYPD says a man was shot and killed by police in Brooklyn Monday evening. The suspect went down a fire escape to the backyard below, and that's when he encountered a police sergeant and another cop outside.

A revolver was recovered at the scene, police said. The sergeant and another officer both fired their weapons, striking the suspect twice.

The suspect was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital.

"They pretended to be people fixing something, but they had the gun to their faces", said the woman, who asked not to be identified and who said she spoke to the victims.

This is the second police-involved shooting in Brooklyn in recent days.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear. He was described as in his 30s, heavyset, and last seen wearing a construction-type of helmet. On Sunday morning, cops shot an armed man who witnesses said was displaying "total irrational behavior" in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.
